Saharan sand and fine dust regularly reach Western Europe, a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly common and more severe due to climate change. These dust clouds are created by powerful sandstorms in the Sahara, transporting millions of tonnes of dust through the atmosphere. The dust can travel thousands of kilometres and has significant impacts on air quality, the environment and infrastructure.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of Sahara sand and particulate matter on Western Europe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every year, between 400 and 2,200 teragrams (Tg, a billion kilograms!) of Saharan sand is blown into the air from North Africa, of which about 12% reaches Europe. This happens mostly in spring, but due to changing weather patterns, we now see episodes more often in other seasons as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2022, for instance, an exceptionally intense dust storm was observed, with high concentrations of particulate matter (PM10) measured in countries such as Spain, France and even Germany. A significant Sahara sand episode also hit western Europe in early 2025, with the Netherlands and Belgium experiencing orange skies and a clearly visible layer of dust on solar panels and other surfaces. The air became visibly cloudy, cars became covered in a layer of red dust and air quality deteriorated significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particles of Sahara sand have a diameter of only a few micrometres, meaning they can penetrate deep into the lungs. Although the dust itself does not usually pose any direct health risks, it can mix with other air pollutants, which can cause respiratory problems in vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with asthma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climate change and increasing drought<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Climate change plays an important role in the increase in these dust transports. Longer dry periods in both the Sahara and Europe mean that more Saharan sand is available to be carried by the wind. In addition, changes in atmospheric circulation patterns lead to more frequent and intense dust storms reaching Europe. Researchers have found that the number of Sahara sand episodes in Europe has increased significantly in recent years, which is partly attributed to these changing weather patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seasonal impact of Sahara sand and particulate matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Netherlands and Belgium, we typically see the highest concentrations of Saharan sand in spring (March-May), when specific air currents promote transport from North Africa. Fine dust, on the other hand, is a year-round problem, peaking during dry periods and in areas with a lot of industry or traffic. The effects are not the same in all regions - southern provinces typically experience earlier and more intense Saharan sand episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact on solar panels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For solar panel owners, this phenomenon poses specific challenges. A layer of Sahara sand or fine dust on solar panels can reduce energy output by as much as 20%, especially in large solar parks or industrial plants that rely on maximum efficiency. Regular cleaning of solar panels is essential to prevent this loss of efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
